[PERSONALITY] soft-spoken with a bit of a quick temper, but nonetheless a helpful and compassionate person, despite his time in prison. Not very social, and tends to talk to himself, which may be proof of his standpoint as a loner in the past.
[BACKGROUND] Murphy was once happily married to a woman named Carol, and they had a young son named Charlie to whom Murphy was a very devoted father. His happy life was shattered, however, when a neighbor named Patrick Napier kidnapped Charlie, put him in a plastic bag, and dropped him into the lake. Charlie drowned and Murphy's life changed forever, suddenly revolving around the thought of revenge. He stole a police car and led the authorities on a ten hour car chase in hopes of being put in the same prison as Napier, who had been prosecuted for his crimes. Despite the fact that it led Carol to divorce Murphy, he eventually got his wish, with help from a crooked prison guard named George Sewell. Sewell arranged for Murphy to be able to kill Napier, and in return he asked Murphy to kill another guard, one who had always been kind to Murphy, named Frank. Murphy refused, and Sewell beat Frank into a vegetative state and framed Murphy for the crime. Murphy was transferred to a maximum security prison, but on the way the bus crashed in the woods near the town of Silent Hill. A guard from the maximum security prison, Anne Cunningham, who happened to be Frank's daughter, pursued Murphy relentlessly as the two of them struggled to escape Silent Hill. Untold horrors waited for Murphy there, and he was barely able to escape with his life.
